Coal Shipping from Indonesia to India: A Practical Chartering Guide
Indonesia is the largest source of India’s seaborne thermal coal imports. For importers, traders and power producers, choosing the right vessel and charter structure has a direct impact on landed cost. This guide explains the basics of coal chartering on the Indonesia–India route.
Where Indonesian coal is loaded
Most export coal is loaded in East and South Kalimantan, often at anchorages where barges bring coal alongside the ocean vessel. Commonly referenced loading areas include Samarinda, Muara Pantai, Taboneo and Banjarmasin. Because many of these are anchorage operations, loading rates and weather can affect voyage time.
Which vessel sizes are used
- Supramax and Ultramax (about 50,000–65,000 DWT): geared vessels suited to smaller parcels and ports without shore cranes.
- Panamax and Kamsarmax (about 65,000–85,000 DWT): common for larger coal cargoes to deeper Indian ports.
- Capesize: used less often on this route, mainly where port draft and cargo size allow.
Main Indian discharge ports
Indonesian coal is discharged at ports on both coasts, including Paradip, Dhamra, Gangavaram, Krishnapatnam, Kamarajar (Ennore), Mundra and Kandla. Draft, berth restrictions and discharge rates at each port influence the right vessel choice.
Voyage charter or time charter?
Most single cargoes move on voyage charter terms, with freight agreed per tonne. Regular buyers with steady volumes sometimes prefer a time charter or contract of affreightment. Read our explanation of voyage charter vs time charter and our dry bulk chartering services.
What to include in a coal chartering enquiry
- Cargo type and specification (e.g. thermal coal, GAR)
- Quantity and tolerance
- Load and discharge ports
- Laycan
- Load and discharge rates and terms
- Vessel requirements such as age, gear and maximum draft
